It all started about five years ago when I was twelve. My grandfather had filled my head full of all sorts of stories. Mostly of muskrat trapping and fisher trapping. He showed me all of his traps and equipment in the shed. Well that was that. I snatched those 12 number 1 jumps and headed for home. Summer I had done enough preparing to trap that season on a small bog about a quarter mile down the road. I had my slide poles cut and everything boiled and I was ready. Well that year I caught 14 muskrats and one small mink. I was hooked. Through the years I have trapped a little on the side but this year I have my driver's license and decided to go after em' with both barrels. I spent almost two whole paychecks on traps and supplies. But I think it was worth it. I bought another dozen 110's and a dozen victor #2's. This year there was a special fox and coyote season here in Maine. On October 15th I went out and started to plant a few traps down behind an old dairy farm. Where I set up there was a seeded potato field with a road that lead down to a hay field. I set one #2 just off the road with double stakes and short chains. then I set another trap on the other end of the road just about 15 feet off to the side. I made one more set off to the edge of a gravelly spot on the road with a clump of grass with coyote droppings on it as my dirt hole backer. The next morning I came back to check and the trap in the potato field held a nice 30 pound coyote and the trap in the hay field had been dug up. I reset and rebaited everything and went on my merry way. Monday morning before school I went down to check and I couldn't believe my eyes. I had my first triple on coyotes. In the same field no less. I was beaming with pride. I also caught a nice coon that morning. That night was a late night because I'm not very quick at skinning and go very slow so as not to put holes in my fur. That Is one of my best stories and it just recently happened on October 23, 2000.
